Background of the study
Rapid population growth in urban areas often outpaces the development of essential public services, notably sanitation. In Nnewi North, the surge in population density has led to severe sanitation challenges, including waste management inefficiencies and the proliferation of informal settlements. Recent research (Okafor, 2023; Uche, 2024) indicates that inadequate sanitation facilities and mismanagement of waste are directly linked to health hazards and environmental degradation. This study investigates the historical trends of population expansion and its impacts on sanitation infrastructure. It examines the interplay between population pressures, urban planning deficiencies, and the resulting sanitation challenges. Emphasis is placed on the need for innovative planning, effective policy implementation, and community participation to improve sanitation services. The integration of urban studies with public health perspectives offers a multidimensional approach to addressing these challenges, ensuring that rapid population growth does not compromise public health and environmental standards (Okafor, 2023).
Statement of the problem
The rapid population increase in Nnewi North has strained existing sanitation infrastructure, leading to poor waste management and heightened public health risks. The inadequacy of current systems has resulted in increased incidences of disease and environmental degradation. Despite government efforts, the gap between population growth and sanitation capacity remains a critical issue. This study aims to identify the key factors contributing to the sanitation crisis and to propose actionable solutions to enhance waste management and public health in the area (Uche, 2024).

This study is limited to investigating the effects of rapid population growth on sanitation in Nnewi North Local Government Area.
